A pair of Royal Air Force Typhoon aircraft taking off from an airbase in the Middle East.
Royal Air Force personnel from 6 Squadron, RAF Leuchars, took part in a multinational exercise from 906 Expeditionary Air Wing (EAW) in the Middle East.
Exercise Shaheen Star 5, is a Combined Air Operation (COMAO) exercise conducted over the skies of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Typhoon aircraft from 6 Squadron based at RAF Leuchars in Scotland had the opportunity to work closely with land and maritime components to demonstrate the aircrafts Multi Role Combat Ready (MRCR) capabilities.
The training provided an ideal opportunity to use the Typhoons state of the art avionics suite and targeting pod in a three-dimensional battle space allowing the crew to prosecute rapidly changing targets in the air and on the ground. All Squadron personnel gained valuable experience in collaborating with coalition partners. The sheer complexity of Shaheen Star 5 tested aircraft, personnel and their training to the full.
Close Air Support (CAS) sorties were conducted and fully integrated with Forward Air Controllers (FAC) on the ground, provided by their UAE partners. The ample training opportunity throughout the exercise allowed the Squadron to develop further its MRCR capability.
Joint operations with HMS Dragon, one of the Royal Navys Type 45 destroyers in the region, proved to be a real success. This additional dynamic element provided invaluable experience to all involved. The multi-role Typhoon was able to adapt to any given situation, demonstrating its outstanding capability within the ever-changing environment
