RAF Typhoon Display Team Jet for 2014

The newly painted tail of the RAF Typhoon Display jet, from 29 Reserve (R) Squadron (Sqn) is flown for the first time and accompanied by a Typhoon in the original design.
29(R) Sqn are based at Royal Air Force (RAF) Coningsby in Lincolnshire and their prim, ary role is to provide support to air operations and train new pilots on the Eurofighter Typhoon airframe. They are also home to the Eurofighter Typhoon Display Team, with pilot Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Noel Rees piloting the display and supported by squadron engineers and other station personnel.
The tail was designed by Adam Johnson of Adam Johnson Concepts and painted by Serco contractors based at RAF Coningsby. It took 4 days to complete and contains the squadrons eblem, the buzzard and it's famous XXX.
The purpose of the Typhoon Display team is to show audiences its varied and expansive capabilities. The multi-role fighter jet is the newest in the RAF and the most advanced. It recently saw it's first combat experience over Libya in 2011 and were deployed to Cyprus to protect the Sovereign Base Area last year. There are currently four Typhoon Squadrons based at RAF Coningsby; 29(R) Sqn; 41 Test & Evaluation Squadron (TES); 11 Fighter (F) Squadron and 3 Fighter (F) Squadron. It is also home the the Typhoon Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) South squadron, who can be launched at anytime to police British Airspace as required. This was called into action most recently intercepting a Pakistani Airlines flight which was reported hijacked last year. There are also a further two Squadrons based in Scotland at RAF Leuchars as well as QRA North.

RAF Typhoon

Shark Attack by Squadron Leader John Eklund, an RAF Reservist with 7644(VR) Squadron.
An RAF Typhoon appears like a shark from the depths. This photograph was taken from the back of a transport aircraft over a lake in the Baltic region where the Typhoons are currently deployed in the NATO Baltic Air Policing Role. Typhoons also secure the skies over the UK and the Falkland Islands to protect the Nation's airspace. In order to do this they maintain a constant 24/7 QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) force. RAF Typhoons were also deployed in support of Op ELLAMY over Libya.Sqn Ldr John Eklund is an RAF Reservist and in his military role he works for 7644(VR) Media and Communications Squadron based at RAF High Wycombe.

ASRAAM Missiles Fitted to RAF Typhoon Jet

Air-to-Air ASRAAM missiles fitted to a Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jet.
The AIM-132 ASRAAM is a high speed, highly manoeuvrable, heat-seeking, air-to-air missile. Built by MBDA UK Ltd, the missile is designed as a fire-and-forget weapon, able to counter intermittent target obscuration in cloud as well as sophisticated infrared (IR) countermeasures. Although ASRAAM is predominantly intended for use in the within-visual-range (WVR) arena, it also has capabilities that permit its use in the beyond-visual-range arena.
The missile uses a new Raytheon Imaging IR seeker head and it is the world's first IR missile to enter service using a sapphire-domed staring array detector, which detects the whole target scene. When combined with digital signal-processing and imaging software, ASRAAM is able to see individual areas of its target, such as engines, cockpit or wings. The picture is very similar to a monochrome TV picture, and gives the missile excellent long-range target acquisition, even against employed countermeasures such as flares or similar pyrotechnics. In addition to its ability to image targets, the seeker also allows the missile to be fired at very high off-boresight angles, in either lock-before or lock-after-launch modes. Because the missile has a fire-and-forget capability, the pilot can engage multiple targets with several missiles simultaneously. To increase its speed and its operating range, the missile has a low-drag design; only tail fins are provided for control purposes; and a new, low-signature, dual-burn, high-impulse solid rocket motor provides the power. Compared to other similar missiles, this new motor improves both the missile's instantaneous acceleration and its maximum cruise velocity
