EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, we find a team of aviation pioneers gathered around an English Electric Canberra B(I)8, a modified version of the iconic jet transport aircraft. The Canberra B(I)8 underwent significant upgrades in 1971, with the addition of the Ferranti Laser Ranger and Marked Target Seeker systems. From left to right, we see Bill Roberts, a flight test observer, Len Houston, the chief test pilot from Ferranti, and John Mabberley of the Royal Aeronautical Establishment (RAE). The trio stands proudly before the Canberra B(I)8, marking a pivotal moment in the development of aviation technology. The Ferranti Laser Ranger and Marked Target Seeker systems were cutting-edge technologies designed for airborne surveillance and target acquisition. The Laser Ranger used a laser beam to measure the distance to the target, while the Marked Target Seeker employed a heat-seeking radar to detect and track marked targets. Len Houston, a seasoned test pilot, would have been responsible for putting these new systems through their paces during rigorous flight tests. Bill Roberts and John Mabberley, both experts in their respective fields, would have provided valuable insights and guidance throughout the testing process. This photograph captures a moment of innovation and collaboration between industry and academia, as they worked together to push the boundaries of aviation technology. The English Electric Canberra B(I)8, with its new modifications, would go on to play a crucial role in military aviation, paving the way for future advancements in airborne surveillance and target acquisition.
