Margaret of Anjou (1430-1482), Queen Consort of Henry VI of England with Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York (1411-1460). Their rivalry was a major catalyst for the Wars of the Roses. Richard governed England as Lord Protector during Henrys mental illness in 1453-1454 and held ambitions to take the throne for himself. After a lengthy power struggle, Richard was killed by Lancastian forces at the Battle of Wakefield in 1460. His head was displayed on a pike above Micklegate Bar in York, wearing a paper crown. His son took the throne as King Edward IV the following year after the Yorkists decisively defeated the Lancastrians at the Battle of Towton

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print, we witness a pivotal moment in English history. The artist Brown skillfully captures the intense rivalry between Queen Margaret of Anjou and Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York during the tumultuous period of the Wars of the Roses. Queen Margaret, portrayed with regal grace and determination, places a paper crown upon the head of her adversary, symbolizing her triumph over him. The Duke of York's expression reveals his humiliation as he is forced to bear this symbolic defeat. The image transports us back to 15th century England, where power struggles and ambitions for the throne were at their peak. Richard governed as Lord Protector during Henry VI's mental illness but harbored aspirations to claim the crown himself. However, after a fierce battle at Wakefield in 1460, he met his tragic end at the hands of Lancastrian forces. Richard's decapitated head was displayed on Micklegate Bar in York with a paper crown adorning it - an ultimate act of humiliation by his enemies. Yet from this dark chapter emerged King Edward IV, Richard's son who would go on to rule England after decisively defeating the Lancastrians at Towton. This print serves as a poignant reminder of how ambition and rivalry can shape destinies and alter nations forever. It encapsulates not only historical events but also themes such as power struggle, defeat, monarchy, and even gender dynamics within medieval society. Through its monochrome beauty and intricate details captured by Brown’s engraving technique; it invites viewers into an era filled with intrigue and turmoil that defined an entire epoch in British history – The Wars of Roses.
