In this historic photograph, RN02, the first fully mission-equipped EH101 Merlin, ZH822, takes to the skies for its maiden flight from Yeovil on 14 January 1997. The Merlin helicopter, a versatile and advanced aircraft, was developed by AgustaWestland (now Leonardo Helicopters) for the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom. This particular Merlin, RN02, was the first to be fully outfitted with the latest mission equipment, making it a significant milestone in the program's development. The Merlin helicopter is a twin-engine, medium-lift helicopter capable of performing a range of roles, including anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and transport. With its advanced avionics and powerful engines, the Merlin is able to operate in all weather conditions and at night, making it an essential asset for the Royal Navy. The maiden flight of RN02 marked the beginning of extensive testing and evaluation of the Merlin's capabilities. Over the following months, the helicopter underwent rigorous testing in various environments, including at sea and in different weather conditions. These tests helped to ensure that the Merlin was ready for operational use, and it was eventually deployed on HMS Illustrious in 1998.
