EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from October 1988, we witness a significant moment in the history of rotary-wing aviation as EH Industries' (later AgustaWestland) EH101 PP1 and PP3 helicopters take to the skies. The EH101, a twin-engine, medium-lift helicopter, was a groundbreaking design that combined the advantages of both conventional and tiltrotor helicopters. The PP1 and PP3, registration numbers ZF641 and G-EHIL respectively, are seen here during a flight test campaign in the United Kingdom. The PP1, or Prototype Pilot 1, was the first production-representative EH101 to fly, while PP3 served as a testbed for various systems and configurations. The EH101 was designed to meet the requirements of the Westland-Sikorsky Joint Helicopter Project, which aimed to produce a helicopter for the British Military and the United States Marine Corps. The aircraft's advanced features included a spacious and versatile cabin, a high cruising speed, and excellent hover performance. This photograph captures the essence of innovation and progress in the field of aeronautical engineering. The EH101, later known as the AgustaWestland Merlin, would go on to serve in various roles with military forces around the world, demonstrating the power and versatility of this remarkable helicopter design. The image also serves as a reminder of the crucial role that flight testing plays in the development of new aircraft, as engineers and test pilots work together to push the boundaries of aviation technology. This photograph is a testament to the dedication and ingenuity of those who have shaped the future of rotary-wing aviation.
