Holland Submarine Submarines

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the British submarine HMS Holland 4 as it undergoes trials in the water, circa 1903. Launched on the 23rd of May 1902 and commissioned into the Royal Navy on the 2nd of August 1903, HMS Holland 4 was the second submarine to serve in the British fleet. Named after its American inventor, the innovative Holland 4 was a significant milestone in naval history, marking the beginning of the Royal Navy's submarine fleet. The Edwardian-era submarine was designed by American inventor John Philip Holland, who had previously supplied submarines to the United States Navy. The Holland 4 was 53 feet long and had a beam of 6 feet 6 inches, with a displacement of 100 tons. It was powered by a single 200 horsepower engine and could reach a top speed of 12 knots on the surface and 8 knots underwater. The submarine was armed with two 14-inch torpedo tubes and could carry two torpedoes. The photograph shows the submarine in its natural habitat, surrounded by the shimmering blue waters of the sea. The crew members, dressed in their navy uniforms, can be seen working diligently on the deck, ensuring that all systems are functioning correctly. The submarine's conning tower rises above the water, and the propeller can be seen churning up the water behind it. This photograph is an intriguing glimpse into the early days of submarine warfare and the beginning of the Royal Navy's underwater capabilities. It is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the time, and a reminder of the crucial role that submarines play in naval warfare.
