HMS A5, Royal Nay submarine, 1910s C016 / 2540
HMS A5, Royal Nay submarine. This submarine, seen here in the period from around 1910 to 1915, was among the first submarines commissioned by the British Royal Navy. It was part of the A-class of submarines built between 1902 and 1905, improving on US Plunger-class submarines. HMS A5 was launched in March 1904, and decommissioned in December 1915. Used for defence and training, it carried a crew of 11, and was 32 metres long. On the surface it used a petrol engine, switching to electric power when submerged. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the HMS A5, a remarkable Royal Navy submarine from the early 20th century. Commissioned in the 1910s, this vessel was among the pioneering submarines introduced by the British Royal Navy and belonged to the esteemed A-class of submarines constructed between 1902 and 1905. With its sleek design and advanced technology, it represented a significant improvement over its American counterparts. The photograph captures HMS A5 during its active years between 1910 and 1915, when it served as both a defensive asset and a training platform for naval personnel. Measuring an impressive length of 32 meters, this maritime marvel relied on a petrol engine while on the surface but seamlessly switched to electric power when submerged beneath ocean depths. Manning this technological wonder were eleven dedicated crew members who fearlessly navigated treacherous waters. The image depicts an unidentified European sailor aboard HMS A5, proudly representing Britain's rich naval history. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to this historical snapshot captured by Bain News Service—one of America's earliest news picture libraries—preserved within the Library of Congress/Science Photo Library collection. This evocative portrayal transports us back in time to an era where maritime warfare was rapidly evolving alongside advancements in transportation technology. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and bravery while highlighting Britain's prominent role in shaping naval innovation during that period.
