EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment when Royal Air Force Typhoon aircraft departed from RAF Coningsby to their new home at RAF Leuchars in Scotland. Number 6 Squadron, the first Typhoon fighter squadron in Scotland, will be based at this prestigious location. The Typhoon is a state-of-the-art multi-role combat aircraft that has been in operational service since 2007. To commemorate this significant occasion, a ceremony was held where the Squadrons Standard was presented to the Officer Commanding. On September 11th, as part of the RAF Leuchars Airshow and to celebrate the reformation of the Squadron, an iconic flypast accompanied by parading of the Squadrons Standard for Chief of Air Staff took place. Number 6 Squadron is just one of three planned Typhoon squadrons set to be stationed at RAF Leuchars. Over time, it will grow and train with approximately 200 personnel, many hailing from Scotland themselves. In March 2011, they will assume responsibility for providing Quick Reaction Alert force's northern element – ready to scramble and intercept unidentified aircraft approaching UK airspace. This photograph symbolizes not only a relocation but also showcases Britain's commitment to maintaining air defense capabilities across its territories.
