EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a moment of resilience and bravery in the midst of chaos. In the rugged terrain of Helmand, Afghanistan, soldiers from A Company of 1 Rifles joined forces with the Afghan Uniformed Police (AUP) for a joint helicopter assault. Little did they know that this operation would turn into a fierce battle against insurgents. As an Improvised Explosive Device detonated, tragedy struck when a member of the AUP was injured. However, undeterred by their loss, both soldiers and police continued their patrol. Soon after, they found themselves under heavy fire but refused to back down. Together, they fought valiantly to overcome the attack and make it safely to a nearby patrol base. Amidst this intense operation, one cannot overlook the vital role played by the Royal Air Force Chinook Helicopter and its Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT). This image shows them leaving with the wounded policeman on board as they provide crucial medical care during his evacuation. The dedication and determination exhibited by these brave men highlight their unwavering commitment to protecting others. The AUP's seizure of explosives from an enemy compound showcases their relentless pursuit of peace in war-torn Afghanistan. Additionally, we must acknowledge the sharpshooter from 1 Rifles whose precision eliminated an insurgent involved in this harrowing encounter. Sergeant Alison Baskerville's photograph encapsulates not only the realities faced by our armed forces but also serves as a testament to their courage and sacrifice in service to their countries during Operation Herrick in Afghanistan's challenging province of Helmand.
