RAF Puma Helicopter on Exercise in Norway

Royal Air Force 33 Sqn Pumas conducted winter training which included snow landings and carrying underslung loads, in the mountainous region above Bardufoss, Norway. This image shows a Puma HC1 having just landed on the snow.
Exercise Clockwork 06 was a 14-week training exercise, which ran from December 05 to March 06 and was held at the Norwegian Air Force base of Bardufoss. Its aim was to prepare personnel from all three services to operate in extreme cold weather environments, such as might be experienced during winters in the Balkans or Afghanistan.
Throughout the flying phase of the exercise, Joint Helicopter Command Battlefield helicopter crews from the Royal Air Force, Army and Royal Navy, practiced such skills as snow landings in whiteout conditions, moving personnel from point to point and conducting navigation exercises. Personnel from 33 Squadron RAF Benson, also practised carrying under slung loads beneath their Puma helicopters, during both day and night operations.
The 3rd phase of the exercise, saw participants attend a cold weather survival course, during which they spent 5 days and 4 nights in the Arctic environment of the 500 metre high Norwegian mountains surrounding Bardufoss, where temperatures dropped as low as minus 32 degrees and visibility fell to just a few metres. Mandatory for all personnel who had not done survival training, they learnt how to survive in the sub zero temperatures by digging snow holes, navigating in the harsh terrain and responding to an enemy attack

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of intense training as the Royal Air Force 33 Sqn Pumas conduct winter exercises in the breathtaking mountains above Bardufoss, Norway. The image showcases a Puma HC1 helicopter gracefully touching down on the pristine snow-covered terrain. Exercise Clockwork 06, spanning over 14 weeks from December to March, aimed to equip personnel from all three services with the necessary skills to operate effectively in extreme cold weather environments like those found in the Balkans or Afghanistan. Joint Helicopter Command Battlefield crews from the Royal Air Force, Army, and Royal Navy honed their abilities during this exercise by practicing snow landings amidst whiteout conditions and transporting personnel across various points while conducting navigation exercises. The dedicated members of 33 Squadron RAF Benson also utilized this opportunity to perfect their technique of carrying underslung loads beneath their Puma helicopters during both day and night operations. However, it was during the third phase that participants truly experienced an Arctic environment firsthand. They underwent a rigorous cold weather survival course for five days and four nights amidst temperatures plummeting as low as minus 32 degrees Celsius and visibility reduced to mere meters. During this demanding phase, individuals learned vital survival skills such as constructing snow holes for shelter, navigating treacherous terrains, and responding effectively to enemy attacks. This comprehensive training ensured that these brave men and women were well-prepared for any challenges they may face when deployed into freezing climates around the world.
