HMS Diligence was built in Oresundsvarvet AB, Landskrona, Sweden for the Stena Company and launched in 1981 as the Stena Inspector. She traded in the North Sea as an Oil Rig Support Vessel until the Ministry of Defence chartered the ship in April 1982, as a Battle Damage Repair Ship for support of the operation to retake the Falkland Islands from Argentina. The vessel returned to the UK in 1983, was purchased by the MoD and entered RFA (Royal Fleet Auxiliary) service on 12th March 1984 as RFA Diligence
