EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a significant moment in history as a Harrier aircraft stands tall in a hangar at Kandahar, Afghanistan. The image symbolizes the end of an era for 1 (F) Squadron, the oldest fighter squadron in the RAF, as they marked the conclusion of Harrier air operations in Afghanistan. After five years of relentless engagement with the Taliban during Operation HERRICK, this iconic squadron bid farewell to Afghan soil. In June 2009, they handed over their duties to 12 Squadron's Tornado GR4s from RAF Lossiemouth. The departure of these brave pilots and their Harriers was not just a routine rotation but rather a poignant moment that signified transition and progress. Since 2004, these remarkable aircraft had been providing crucial air cover, ground close air support, and conducting strikes against insurgents on behalf of British and NATO coalition personnel. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are reminded of the sacrifices made by our military forces throughout this challenging campaign. It serves as a testament to their unwavering dedication and commitment to bringing peace and stability to war-torn regions like Helmand province. Let us honor those who served under Operation HERRICK while acknowledging that new chapters await both our courageous troops and advanced technologies like the Harrier jets.
