EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the cockpit of the BBMF's Douglas Dakota ZA947, affectionately known as Kwicherbichan by her crews. The historic aircraft rests in the hangar at RAF Coningsby, where it underwent deep servicing during the winter months. ZA947 played a crucial role in Para-dropping Operations on the eve of D-Day, and later served in re-supply missions and medical evacuations for injured soldiers from forward airfields within combat zones. As part of the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (RAF-BBMF), this iconic aircraft is one among many historical treasures flown at airshows throughout the summer season. The BBMF is administratively under Royal Air Force No 1 Group and operates from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. Alongside Spitfires, Hurricanes, a Lancaster, and Chipmunks, this Dakota stands as a testament to British aviation history. Its presence is often witnessed at events commemorating World War II and British State occasions like Trooping the Colour - an annual celebration marking Queen Elizabeth II's birthday. With its rich heritage and remarkable service record, this photograph encapsulates both nostalgia for our past heroes and admiration for their enduring legacy. It serves as a poignant reminder of those who bravely fought for freedom during wartime while also showcasing the dedication put into preserving these magnificent flying machines for generations to come.
