ASRaM Missiles Fitted to RAF Typhoon Jet

Air-to-Air ASRaM missiles fitted to a Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jet.
The AIM-132 ASRaM is a high speed, highly manoeuvrable, heat-seeking, air-to-air missile. Built by MBDA UK Ltd, the missile is designed as a fire-and-forget weapon, able to counter intermittent target obscuration in cloud as well as sophisticated infrared (IR) countermeasures. Although ASRaM is predominantly intended for use in the within-visual-range (WVR) arena, it also has capabilities that permit its use in the beyond-visual-range arena.
The missile uses a new Raytheon Imaging IR seeker head and it is the worlds first IR missile to enter service using a sapphire-domed staring array detector, which detects the whole target scene. When combined with digital signal-processing and imaging software, ASRaM is able to see individual areas of its target, such as engines, cockpit or wings. The picture is very similar to a monochrome TV picture, and gives the missile excellent long-range target acquisition, even against employed countermeasures such as flares or similar pyrotechnics. In addition to its ability to image targets, the seeker also allows the missile to be fired at very high off-boresight angles, in either lock-before or lock-after-launch modes. Because the missile has a fire-and-forget capability, the pilot can engage multiple targets with several missiles simultaneously. To increase its speed and its operating range, the missile has a low-drag design; only tail fins are provided for control purposes; and a new, low-signature, dual-burn, high-impulse solid rocket motor provides the power. Compared to other similar missiles, this new motor improves both the missiles instantaneous acceleration and its maximum cruise velocity

EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures the powerful combination of ASRaM missiles fitted to a Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jet. These air-to-air missiles, developed by MBDA UK Ltd, are designed to be high speed and highly manoeuvrable, making them a formidable weapon in combat situations. One of the key features of the AIM-132 ASRaM is its ability to counter intermittent target obscuration in cloud and sophisticated infrared countermeasures. This makes it an effective fire-and-forget weapon that can adapt to various scenarios within visual range (WVR) as well as beyond visual range (BVR). The missile utilizes cutting-edge technology with its Raytheon Imaging IR seeker head. It is the world's first IR missile to enter service using a sapphire-domed staring array detector, which provides comprehensive target scene detection. Combined with advanced digital signal-processing and imaging software, ASRaM can identify specific areas of its target such as engines, cockpit or wings. Furthermore, this missile boasts excellent long-range target acquisition capabilities even against deployed countermeasures like flares. Its seeker allows for firing at high off-boresight angles in both lock-before and lock-after-launch modes. With its fire-and-forget capability, pilots have the freedom to engage multiple targets simultaneously using several missiles. The low-drag design enhances speed and operating range while tail fins provide control during flight. Additionally, a new low-signature dual-burn high-impulse solid rocket motor ensures improved acceleration and maximum cruise velocity compared to similar missiles. This photo showcases the state-of-the-art weaponry employed by armed forces worldwide for enhanced air superiority on modern battlefields.
