100 years of the RAF
Pictured are the last three Supermarine Spitfires in service (with the Temperature and Humidity Flight at Hooton Park, Liverpool).
The ceremonial flight to Biggin Hill, on 11th July 1957 marked the start of their honourable retirement flying in the future only on ceremonial occasions.
They were piloted by Group Captain JE " Johnnie" Johnson, Group Captain J Rankin and Wing Commander PD Thompson. The Spitfires are escorted by a Hawker Hunter F5 of 41 Squadron (WN967) and Gloster Javelin FAW1 from 46 Squadron (XA568/H) into Biggin Hill.
