100 years of the RAF
Ground crew manhandle a Gloster Meteor F.3 of the 616 Squadron Detachment at B58/Melsbroek, Belgium, on 6 February 1945.
The aircraft had deployed to the Continent to counter the threat of the German Me262 jet fighter which had started to enter service with the Luftwaffe.
The Meteor was the first British jet fighter and the Allies only jet aircraft to achieve combat operations during the Second World War.
The Meteor first flew in 1943 and commenced operations on 27 July 1944 with No. 616 Squadron RAF.
