Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier HMS Illustrious Returns To Portsmouth Folllowing Refit

Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier HMS Illustrious is escorted by tugs as she returns to Portsmouth following her refit in Scotland.
HMS Illustrious returned to her Portsmouth home today (July 7) after completing a £ 40m maintenance and upgrade programme in Scotland.
The 22, 000 tonne ship, affectionately known as Lusty, was in the Rosyth dockyard in Fife for 16 months where she underwent modifications to turn her into a helicopter and commando carrier capable of carrying a force of up to 20 helicopters and 600 fully kitted out personnel.
Since leaving Rosyth on June 18 Illustrious has been undergoing sea trials off the UK coast. She will carry out further tests off the south coast before returning to the RN fleet at the end of this month.

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier HMS Illustrious makes a triumphant return to Portsmouth, escorted by tugs, after undergoing an extensive refit in Scotland. Affectionately known as Lusty, the 22,000-tonne ship has been transformed into a state-of-the-art helicopter and commando carrier capable of accommodating up to 20 helicopters and 600 fully equipped personnel. Having spent 16 months at Rosyth dockyard in Fife for a £40m maintenance and upgrade program, HMS Illustrious now boasts enhanced capabilities that will greatly contribute to the navy's operational readiness. Following her departure from Rosyth on June 18, she underwent rigorous sea trials off the UK coast before arriving back home today. As she sails majestically towards Portsmouth with the iconic Spinnaker Tower standing tall in the background, this print captures both the grandeur of HMS Illustrious and its significance to British naval power. The image showcases not only a remarkable vessel but also symbolizes resilience and adaptability as it emerges from its transformation stronger than ever. With further tests planned along the south coast before rejoining the Royal Navy fleet later this month, HMS Illustrious stands ready to take on any challenge that lies ahead. This photograph serves as a testament to the dedication and expertise of those involved in her refit while highlighting Britain's commitment to maintaining a formidable maritime force.
