EDITORS COMMENTS
November rain brings no relief for these grid-stalkers as they hurtle towards Turn One on a wet and wild opening lap at the 1991 Australian Grand Prix. Ayrton Senna, ever the master of the slippery stuff, takes an early lead in his McLaren MP4/6 Honda ahead of teammate Gerhard Berger's identical machine. But Nigel Mansell is hot on their heels, his Williams FW14 Renault spewing out a plume of spray as he chases down the duo. Behind them, Nelson Piquet and Jean Alesi are locked in battle for fourth place - the Benetton B191 Ford and Ferrari 643 respectively trading paint as they navigate the treacherous conditions. The crowd is on its feet at Adelaide's iconic circuit, their cheers drowned out by the din of revving engines and screeching tires. As Senna stretches his lead, Mansell closes in on Berger for second place - a battle that will rage throughout the 76-lap contest. Meanwhile Piquet and Alesi are locked in an intense struggle for position, each trying to gain an edge over their rival as they fight against the clock. The drama is palpable as these F1 greats do battle on this sodden Adelaide afternoon.
