EDITORS COMMENTS
In this nostalgic print from the Huddersfield Examiner Archive, we are transported back to the 1990s when nine Cub packs eagerly participated in the annual Huddersfield South-West district chess competition. The event took place at Marsden Scout group headquarters, nestled within the village United Reformed Church. Captured in this snapshot are five young chess enthusiasts who showcased their skills and sportsmanship during the intense competition. From left to right, we see Karl Turrell, Luke Moghaddam, Oliver Stephenson, Matthew Johnson, and Philip Rawnsley. Their focused expressions reveal their determination to outwit their opponents on the chessboard. The ultimate victor of this challenging tournament was Crosland Hill Cub Paul Trueman. His strategic moves earned him first place while Longwood's Luke Moghaddam secured a well-deserved second position. Not far behind was Crosland Hill's Neil Burling claiming third place. To commemorate their achievements, District Commissioner Geoff Ramm proudly presented Paul Trueman with a gleaming trophy alongside certificates for all participants. This heartwarming image encapsulates not only a moment of triumph but also highlights the importance of youth organizations like Scouts in fostering camaraderie and intellectual growth among children. As we delve into our collective memory lane through prints like these, we are reminded of simpler times filled with board games and friendly competitions that brought communities together.
