EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the moment actress Nancy Kwan arrives at the premiere of "Flower Drum Song". Born in Hong Kong to a Chinese father and English mother, Kwan's multicultural background played an influential role in her career. After being raised in England and training with the prestigious Royal Ballet, she returned to Hong Kong where she established her own dance school. Kwan rose to fame when she stepped into the shoes of France Nuyen in "The World of Susie Wong" (1961), gaining recognition for her talent and beauty. Following this success, she took on the lead role in "Flower Drum Song" (1961), where she mesmerized audiences with her performance of the beloved Rogers and Hammerstein classic, "I Enjoy Being a Girl". However, as time went on, opportunities began to dwindle for Kwan. By 1967, her once-thriving career was fading away. Undeterred by setbacks, she found solace in acting roles within low-budget films produced in Hong Kong. In recent years though, Kwan has experienced a resurgence of sorts as she embarked on promoting her own line of cosmetics. This unexpected comeback showcases not only her enduring beauty but also highlights her entrepreneurial spirit. This photograph serves as a reminder of Nancy Kwan's remarkable journey through the entertainment industry during the 1960s - from rising starlet to temporary obscurity and now reclaiming some well-deserved recognition.
