EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait depicts Samuel Pufendorf (1632-1694), a prominent German jurist and historian of the late 17th century. Born in Lusatia, a region between Germany and Poland, Pufendorf studied law at the University of Leipzig and later at the University of Wittenberg. He went on to hold academic positions at the Universities of Heidelberg, Göttingen, and Lund in Sweden. Pufendorf is best known for his contributions to natural law and international law. His magnum opus, "De iure naturae et gentium," published in 1672, is a comprehensive treatise on natural law and international relations. In this work, Pufendorf argued that natural law is based on the rational nature of human beings and that it provides the foundation for a just and orderly society. He also emphasized the importance of the social contract in creating a political community. As a historian, Pufendorf is particularly noted for his "Historiae Danicae Libri Duodecim," a twelve-volume history of Denmark from ancient times to the present. This work was published between 1687 and 1693 and is considered a seminal work in Danish history. Despite his significant achievements, Pufendorf's life was not without controversy. He was involved in a public dispute with the philosopher Thomas Hobbes over the nature of natural law and the role of the state. Nevertheless, Pufendorf's ideas continue to influence modern legal and political thought. This portrait, likely taken towards the end of Pufendorf's life, captures the intellectual intensity and seriousness of this remarkable scholar. With his piercing gaze and well-worn books in the background, the image serves as a testament to Pufendorf's enduring legacy as a jurist, historian, and intellectual giant of the late 17th century.
