1893 1968 Chairman Fraes Master Raes Sempill 1927

EDITORS COMMENTS
Col The Master of Sempill, AFC (1893-1968), a pioneering figure in the early days of aviation, is depicted in this striking photograph from 1968. Born in 1893, Col Sempill was a Scottish aviation pioneer who made significant contributions to the field during the interwar period. He was a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS) and served as its Chairman from 1927 to 1930. During the early 1920s, Col Sempill became interested in aviation and began to experiment with aircraft design and construction. He built his first aircraft, a biplane, in 1924, and went on to design and build several more. In 1927, he formed the Sempill Aviation Company to manufacture and sell his designs. Col Sempill was a passionate advocate for the use of aircraft for transport and exploration. In 1929, he led an expedition to Greenland, becoming the first person to fly an aircraft over the ice cap. He also undertook several other pioneering flights, including a transatlantic flight from Scotland to Newfoundland in 1930. This photograph captures Col Sempill in his later years, standing proudly next to one of his aircraft. Despite his advanced age, his passion for aviation remained undiminished. The planes in the background serve as a reminder of the incredible progress that had been made in aviation since the early days of flight. Col The Master of Sempill's legacy continues to inspire new generations of aviation pioneers. His contributions to the field of aviation, particularly in the areas of transport and exploration, have left a lasting impact on the history of flight.
