The Schneider Trophy was an international air racing competition, established in 1913 by the French aviation pioneer, Henri Schneider, to promote the development of seaplanes and high-speed flight. The Supermarine Sea Lion II, designed and built by the British aircraft manufacturing company Supermarine Aviation Works, was a two-seat biplane with a distinctive hull-mounted wing configuration. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII liquid-cooled V12 engines, the Sea Lion II boasted a top speed of over 130 miles per hour, making it a formidable contender in the race. The 1922 Schneider Trophy race was a grueling test of speed, endurance, and skill. The course consisted of five laps around the Bay of Naples, with each lap covering a distance of approximately 11 miles. The Sea Lion II, piloted by Lieutenant Commander J.R.H. Porte, completed the race in a record-breaking time of 1 hour, 15 minutes, and 48 seconds, shattering the previous record by over 10 minutes.
