Lion Naples Schneider Supermarine Trophy 1922 Aeronautics

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the Supermarine Sea Lion II, registration number G-EBAH, proudly displays the winner's laurels after claiming victory in the prestigious 1922 Schneider Trophy race held in Naples, Italy. The Schneider Trophy was an international air racing competition, established in 1913 by the French aviation pioneer, Henri Schneider, to promote the development of seaplanes and high-speed flight. The Supermarine Sea Lion II, designed and built by the British aircraft manufacturing company Supermarine Aviation Works, was a two-seat biplane with a distinctive hull-mounted wing configuration. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII liquid-cooled V12 engines, the Sea Lion II boasted a top speed of over 130 miles per hour, making it a formidable contender in the race. The 1922 Schneider Trophy race was a grueling test of speed, endurance, and skill. The course consisted of five laps around the Bay of Naples, with each lap covering a distance of approximately 11 miles. The Sea Lion II, piloted by Lieutenant Commander J.R.H. Porte, completed the race in a record-breaking time of 1 hour, 15 minutes, and 48 seconds, shattering the previous record by over 10 minutes. This photograph captures a moment of triumph and innovation, as the Supermarine Sea Lion II, G-EBAH, etched its name into the annals of aviation history. The victory marked a significant milestone in the development of seaplanes and high-speed flight, paving the way for future advancements in aircraft design and technology.
