EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment when the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) de Havilland Canada DHC-4 Caribou A4-208 (msn 208) touched down at RAF Luqa in Malta on February 19, 1965. The delivery flight marked the beginning of the Caribou's service with 38 Squadron, a significant milestone in the RAAF's transport fleet. The de Havilland Canada DHC-4 Caribou is a versatile short takeoff and landing (STOL) transport aircraft, renowned for its ability to operate from unpaved runways and short strips. This capability made it an ideal choice for the RAAF, which required a reliable and robust transport aircraft for its operations in various challenging environments. The Caribou A4-208, with its distinctive hump-backed design and large cargo doors, is shown here taxing towards the parking area after its successful landing. The aircraft's arrival in Malta was a significant event, marking the start of a long and successful service history with the RAAF. The Caribou went on to serve in various roles, including troop transport, medical evacuation, and humanitarian aid missions. This photograph is part of The Peter Butt Aviation Collection, which showcases an extensive range of aviation images from the 1940s to the present day. The collection offers a unique insight into the history of aviation and the evolution of aircraft designs and technologies.
