EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts the Turatis Boubou, scientifically known as Laniarius turatii, also referred to as the Blue Shrike or Bicolored Shrike. The illustration was drawn and engraved by the skilled hand of Richard Polydore Nodder and published in George Shaw and Frederick Nodder's renowned work, The Naturalist's Miscellany, in London, 1802. The Turatis Boubou is a medium-sized bird native to the forests of Central and West Africa. The male and female of this species exhibit distinct coloration, with the male displaying a brilliant blue-black plumage, while the female sports a more subdued brownish-gray appearance. The bird's distinctive feature is the white supercilium, or eyebrow, which gives it an alert and intelligent appearance. This illustration is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of the natural history illustrations of the early 19th century. The meticulous engraving process involved the transfer of the artist's drawing onto a copper plate, which was then etched with acid to create the lines and contours. The plate was then hand-colored, resulting in a vivid and lifelike representation of the Turatis Boubou. The Naturalist's Miscellany was a groundbreaking work in the field of zoology and natural history, featuring accurate and beautifully illustrated accounts of a wide range of species. This Turatis Boubou illustration is a prime example of the high-quality work produced by Shaw and Nodder, and remains an invaluable resource for ornithologists and historians today.
