Paul Francois Jean Nicolas, Vicomte de Barras (1755-1829): A Prominent Figure of the French Directory This striking handcoloured lithograph depicts Paul Francois Jean Nicolas, Vicomte de Barras, a pivotal figure during the French Revolution and the subsequent Directory period. Born on March 23, 1755, in Marseille, France, Barras rose to prominence as a military leader and a key player in the political landscape of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In the image, Vicomte de Barras is shown wearing the uniform of a member of the Directoire, the five-man executive committee that governed France between 1795 and 1799. Established following the fall of the Committee of Public Safety and the end of the Reign of Terror, the Directory aimed to restore order and stability to the country. Barras, who served as a minister under the Directory, is best known for his role in the coup of 18 Fructidor (September 4, 1797), which saw the removal of several radical members of the government. This coup marked the end of the radical phase of the Revolution and ushered in a more moderate period. The lithograph is taken from "Costumes Historiques de la France," a comprehensive collection of historical costumes produced by Le Bibliophile Jacob, also known as Paul Lacroix, in 1852. The meticulously handcoloured details bring the uniform of Vicomte de Barras to life, providing a vivid glimpse into the fashion and style of the late 18th century.
