Lady Mary Ashley-Cooper by Madame Yevonde

Lady Mary Ashley-Cooper (1902-1936), later Lady Alington, eldest daughter of the Earl and Countess of Shaftesbury. Pictured in part colour by Madame Yevonde in August 1923. Described as tall and sturdily built, she was, according to The Times, the best swimmer in Mayfair and won countless titles at the Bath Club. She married Lord Alington in 1928 and had one daughter born the following year. She was a familiar figure on the social scene, distinctive because of her hair, which was shoulder length (unusual for the 1930s). Tragically, on 2 August 1936, Lady Alington died while undergoing an operation for acute appendicitis. Date: 1923

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Lady Mary Ashley-Cooper, eldest daughter of the Earl and Countess of Shaftesbury, in August 1923. Lady Mary, later known as Lady Alington, was described as tall and sturdily built, with an impressive athletic prowess. She was renowned as the best swimmer in Mayfair and held numerous titles at the Bath Club. Her distinctive shoulder-length hair, which was unusual for the 1920s, added to her striking appearance. Born in 1902, Lady Mary was a familiar figure on the social scene. Her marriage to Lord Alington in 1928 was followed by the birth of their daughter the following year. Tragically, Lady Alington's life was cut short on 2 August 1936, as she passed away during an operation for acute appendicitis. This portrait, taken by the renowned photographer Madame Yevonde, showcases Lady Mary's elegant and poised demeanor. The use of part colour adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a striking representation of the aristocracy during the 1920s. The image serves as a poignant reminder of Lady Mary's life, her accomplishments, and her enduring legacy.
