EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "English Tourists Hunting in the Highlands of Scotland," we find Doctor Prosody, a literary figure, caught in the act of poaching in the Scottish Highlands. Accompanied by his companions, the doctor is dressed in English attire, while the Scottish gamekeeper, clad in a tartan kilt and gaiters, confronts him with a stern expression. The scene takes place in the picturesque landscape of Scotland, with rolling hills and a serene loch in the background. Doctor Prosody, with a gun slung over his shoulder, seems to have been taken by surprise, as he looks back over his shoulder, perhaps hoping to make a hasty escape. His companions, however, are already under the scrutiny of the Scottish innkeeper, who is shown in the foreground, holding a bill in one hand and a pewter jug or cup in the other. The innkeeper, with a disapproving look, seems to be reproving the audacity of the English tourists. The caricatured illustration, drawn and engraved by Charles Williams, is taken from William Combes' "The Tour of Doctor Prosody, in search of the Antique and the Picturesque, through Scotland, the Hebrides, the Orkney and Shetland Isles," published in London in 1821. The engraving is a humorous commentary on the contrasting cultures of England and Scotland, as well as a warning to English travelers to respect local customs and laws. The doctor and his companions, drunk on whisky and driven by their desire for adventure, have unwittingly found themselves in a situation that could lead to trouble. The scene is reminiscent of the picaresque and parodic travel literature of the time, which often depicted the adventures of a roguish protagonist on the road. Overall, this engraving is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the lives of travelers in Scotland during the early 19th century.
