EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the radiant beauty and youthful grace of Miss Pamela Maude on the occasion of her marriage to Captain William La Touche Congreve in 1916. The daughter of renowned actor Cyril Maude, Pamela's union with Major Congreve was a union of love and honor, as her husband was a decorated war hero. Major Congreve, who later became a Major in the Rifle Brigade, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his extraordinary acts of gallantry during the Battle of Longueval, France, between 6 and 20 July 1916. His inspiring leadership and fearless actions left an indelible mark on his comrades, and his legacy continues to be celebrated in military history. Tragically, Major Congreve was ultimately killed in action, leaving behind his young wife and infant daughter. The Congreve family's military valor is unparalleled, as General Sir Walter Norris Congreve, Major Congreve's father, had also received the Victoria Cross during the Second Boer War. This makes the Congreves one of only three father-son pairs in history to have achieved this remarkable distinction. After Major Congreve's untimely death, Pamela went on to marry Brigadier, the Hon. William Fraser in 1919.
