The Lancaster PA474, part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, took part in

The Lancaster PA474, part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, which took part in the Biggin Hill Air Show in 2007. She is shown here on the runway, preparing to take-off.
PA474 is one of only two Lancasters remaining in airworthy condition out of the 7377 that were built, the other being in Canada. She was built in Chester in mid-1945 and was earmarked for the Tiger Force in the Far East. However, the war with Japan ended before she could take part in any hostilities.
After major servicing at Air Atlantique in Coventry during the winter of 2006/07, PA474 wears the markings of EE139, the Phantom of the Ruhr, a ton-up Lancaster that flew her first 30 ops on No 100 Squadron based at Waltham before completing a further 91 ops on No 550 Squadron at North Killingholme. She sports the letters HR-W of The Ton on her port side and BQ-B of 550 on her starboard, effectively commemorating the crews of both Squadrons

Battle Of Britain Memorial Flight Bbmf Historic Historical Lancaster Runway Vintage Aircraft Air Show Pa474

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Lancaster PA474, a significant part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Captured during the Biggin Hill Air Show in 2007, this iconic aircraft is seen poised on the runway, ready to take flight. PA474 holds a special place in aviation history as one of only two Lancasters that remain airworthy out of the staggering 7,377 that were originally built. The other surviving Lancaster resides in Canada. Constructed in Chester during mid-1945, PA474 was intended for service with Tiger Force in the Far East but never saw combat due to Japan's surrender. Following extensive maintenance at Air Atlantique in Coventry during winter 2006/07, PA474 now proudly displays the markings of EE139 - known as "The Phantom of the Ruhr". This remarkable Lancaster completed her first 30 operations with No 100 Squadron based at Waltham and went on to undertake an additional 91 missions with No 550 Squadron at North Killingholme. On her port side, she bears the letters HR-W representing The Ton squadron while on her starboard side she carries BQ-B symbolizing No 550 Squadron. These markings serve as a poignant tribute to commemorate both squadrons' brave crews who flew countless sorties during World War II. This extraordinary photograph captures not just an aircraft but also pays homage to those who served and sacrificed for their countries throughout history.
