Allscott Sugar Beet Factory JLP01_08_060532

Allscott Sugar Beet Factory, Allscott, Wrockwardine, Telford and Wrekin. A floodlit view of a sugar silo under construction at Allscott Sugar Beet Factory.
A sugar beet factory was at Allscott from 1927 until it closed in 2007. Laing built two sugar silos here in 1961 for the British Sugar Corporation who were the owners of the site. Each silo was able to store 10, 000 tons of granulated sugar and at the time they were constructed, they were the tallest that Laing had built so far using sliding formwork. This photograph was published in September 1961 in the Laing monthly newsletter Team Spirit

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur of the Allscott Sugar Beet Factory in all its floodlit glory. The focal point of the image is a sugar silo under construction, standing tall amidst a backdrop of scaffolding and industrial machinery. This particular factory, located in Allscott, Wrockwardine, Telford and Wrekin, was operational from 1927 until its closure in 2007. In 1961, Laing Construction undertook the task of building two towering sugar silos for the British Sugar Corporation at this very site. These impressive structures had a remarkable storage capacity of 10,000 tons each and were considered to be Laing's tallest creations at that time. The construction process involved innovative sliding formwork techniques that allowed for efficient assembly. Published in September 1961 as part of Laing's monthly newsletter "Team Spirit" this photograph showcases not only the technical prowess involved in constructing such monumental silos but also highlights the importance of sugar production during that era. Today, this image serves as a testament to both engineering excellence and industrial heritage. Preserved by Historic England Archive, it offers us a glimpse into an era when factories like these played a vital role in shaping local economies and communities across Britain.
