EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph print, titled "Richard, Duke of Gloucester invited to assume the crown, 1483" transports us back to a pivotal moment in British history. The image depicts Richard III (1452-1485), the Duke of Gloucester, being offered the crown by his loyal ally and confidant, Henry Stafford, the Duke of Buckingham (1455-1483). The scene takes place during the tumultuous period known as the Wars of the Roses. Following a declaration that King Edward IV's marriage to Elizabeth Grey was invalid due to alleged witchcraft and sorcery, their son King Edward V (1470-1483) was deemed illegitimate. In light of this revelation, Richard graciously accepted Buckingham's invitation to ascend to the throne. Rendered in vibrant color by artist James William Edmund Doyle in 1864, this lithograph beautifully captures both historical accuracy and artistic finesse. The medieval setting is meticulously portrayed with attention given to intricate details such as clothing styles and architectural elements. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from the Historica Graphica Collection, we are transported back in time; witnessing a crucial meeting between two influential figures who played significant roles in shaping Britain's destiny. This print serves as a reminder of how power struggles and political intrigue can dramatically alter nations' courses throughout history. With its rich symbolism and historical significance, this lithograph offers an intriguing glimpse into one chapter of England's royal lineage - a testament to our enduring fascination with monarchy and its impact on society.
