Battlecruiser HMS Repulse, 1937

Battlecruiser HMS Repulse, 1937. Launched in 1916, HMS Repulse saw action in the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight in November 1917. Deployed to the Far East in the Second World War, she was sunk, together with the battleship HMS Prince of Wales by Japanese air attack off Ceylon in December 1941. The sinking of two such powerful vessels purely by use of aircraft revolutionised naval warfare. The aircraft carrier took over from the battleship as the most potent naval weapon. Cigarette card from The Navy series, produced by Senior Service Cigarettes, 1937

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic Battlecruiser HMS Repulse, a symbol of British naval power in the 1930s. Launched in 1916, this formidable warship played a significant role in both World Wars. In November 1917, she valiantly fought during the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight, showcasing her strength and resilience. However, it was during the Second World War that HMS Repulse faced its tragic fate. Deployed to the Far East, she met her demise alongside the battleship HMS Prince of Wales in December 1941 when they were mercilessly attacked by Japanese aircraft off Ceylon. This catastrophic event marked a turning point in naval warfare as it highlighted how vulnerable even powerful vessels could be against aerial assaults. The significance of this image lies not only in capturing an iconic warship but also in representing a pivotal moment that revolutionized naval tactics forever. The sinking of these two mighty ships signaled the rise of aircraft carriers as the most potent weapon on water. This cigarette card from The Navy series produced by Senior Service Cigarettes serves as a historical artifact commemorating an era defined by conflict and technological advancements. It reminds us of the bravery exhibited by sailors like those aboard HMS Repulse who risked their lives defending their nations at sea.
