Apache Helicopter at Sea

An Army Air Corps Apache attack helicopter takes off from HMS Illustrious.
HMS Illustrious was joined by two Apache Attack Helicopters from 656 Squadron, Army Air Corps. They came out to the ship to carry out some deck landing practice. Their usual operating areas are over land, so it is a new experience for a lot of the aircrews to " get their feet wet" (fly over the sea). Landing on a moving deck at sea can also be extremely challenging to the crews so they need regular practise to hone their skills.
HMS Illustrious was currently undergoing training off the south coast of England under the direction of Flag Officer Sea Training

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring sight of an Army Air Corps Apache attack helicopter taking off from the deck of HMS Illustrious at sea. The ship was joined by two Apache Attack Helicopters from 656 Squadron, as they embarked on a unique training exercise to practice landing on a moving deck over the vast ocean. For these skilled aircrews, accustomed to operating in land-based areas, flying over the sea presented them with an exciting new challenge. As they "get their feet wet" it is evident that this experience is both exhilarating and demanding for them. Regular practice sessions are crucial for honing their skills in landing on a constantly shifting platform. HMS Illustrious, under the guidance of Flag Officer Sea Training, was currently undergoing training off England's south coast when this remarkable moment was captured by PO (Phot) Ray Jones. The silhouette of the powerful Apache against the backdrop of a breathtaking sunset or sunrise adds an extra layer of beauty and intensity to this image. This print showcases not only the impressive capabilities and equipment utilized by our armed forces but also highlights their dedication to continuous improvement through rigorous training exercises. It serves as a reminder of the immense skill and bravery displayed by our military personnel as they navigate challenging environments in service to their country.
