Tornado GR4 Takes Off from RAF Lossiemouth for Afghanistan
A GR4 Tornado from 9 Squadron takes off from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, headed for Operation Herrick in Afghanistan.
The UK sent two additional Royal Air Force Tornado jets to Afghanistan, the Defence Secretary announced on a visit to British forces serving there.
Dr Liam Fox, on his second visit to Afghanistan since being appointed Secretary of State, confirmed that the two Tornado GR4 aircraft were sent from RAF Lossiemouth in Moray, arriving at Kandahar Airfield Thursday 12 August 2010.
The deployment followed a request by the Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), General David Petraeus, for an increase in air support to provide greater protection to ground forces. The aircraft joined the eight RAF Tornado GR4s already provided to support the multinational pool and boosted flying hours by 25 per cent, or an extra 130 flying hours per month

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, a Tornado GR4 takes off from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, embarking on a crucial mission to Afghanistan. The image captures the raw power and determination of the Royal Air Force as they support Operation Herrick. The Defence Secretary, Dr Liam Fox, made an announcement during his visit to British forces serving in Afghanistan that two additional Tornado jets were being sent from RAF Lossiemouth. These aircraft arrived at Kandahar Airfield on August 12th, 2010. This deployment was in response to a request by General David Petraeus, Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), for increased air support to protect ground forces. With their arrival, the number of RAF Tornado GR4s supporting the multinational pool grew to ten. This boost enabled an impressive increase of 25% in flying hours per month or an extra 130 flying hours. It is evident that these powerful machines play a vital role in ensuring the safety and success of ground operations. As we gaze upon this awe-inspiring photograph, we are reminded of the bravery and dedication exhibited by our armed forces every day. Their unwavering commitment to protecting lives and promoting peace shines through each takeoff like this one captured by SAC Garry Perkins.
